FPA Working for You

We believe it is in your best interest to understand what services you are receiving from a financial planner, what results are being achieved and how a planner is compensated. We advocate for complete transparency, clearly understood information and high standards of conduct for anyone offering financial planning. FPA requires that all its members adhere to a Code of Ethics and deliver financial planning services in accordance with the FPA Standard of Care.

To ensure Americans best interests are served when receiving financial planning advice, FPA partnered with the CFP of Standards (CFP Board) and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) to create the Financial Planning Coalition. The Financial Planning Coalition works with legislators to encourage regulations that will help you identify competent, ethical advice-givers who are subject to a fiduciary duty in the delivery of financial planning services.

Community Service

The Financial Planning Association represents a promise of financial well-being, hoping to create a world where everyone thrives and prospers. We are committed to helping Americans achieve their goals and dreams and bring our financial expertise and resources to communities nationwide. Below are just some of the ways FPA is working for you.

FPA Financial Planning Week

FPA will celebrate its eleventh annual FPA Financial Planning Week® October 1-7, 2012. FPA Financial Planning Week brings together those who need, support and deliver financial planning. During the week, FPA strives to create and build the public's awareness of the financial planning process to enable them to make smart financial decisions to achieve their life goals and dreams. 2011 FPA Financial Planning Week
In celebration of FPA Financial Planning Week, FPA and its nationwide network of chapters conducted events across the country, including Financial Planning Days, educational seminars, personal finance hotlines and interviews — more than 50 financial education events and 25 gubernatorial and mayoral proclamations were secured nationwide to help individuals discover the value of financial planning. In addition, FPA partnered with The Wall Street Journal for the eighth time to publish “Private Wealth Management,” in September in conjunction with FPA Experience 2011. FPA also continued to team up with Junior Achievement for the fifth consecutive year to teach elementary, junior and high school students' basic money management skills.

In addition to the traditional FPA Financial Planning Week activities, we were excited to work with chapters to coordinate Financial Planning Days for the second year in October 2011. Financial Planning Days was created in partnership with FPA, Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Foundation for Financial Planning and The U.S. Conference of Mayors. Financial Planning Days is an effort to help Americans with their financial planning needs through a series of clinics and educational workshops powered by the financial planning community and embraced by city governments nationwide. As part of Financial Planning Days, qualified and experienced financial planners provided free, no-strings attached advice and education in 31 cities nationwide this year. Through these events, we aspire to help Americans discover the value of financial planning, improve the nation’s economic stability, and develop and implement sustainable community programs that continue to grow and support our initiative over time by empowering thousands of individuals with financial planning information. We're excited to announce that FPA Financial Planning Week was recognized on ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership's 2010 Associations Advance America Honor Roll. The 2010 Associations Advance America Awards program recognizes associations that propel America forward. Only 24 programs were selected for this recognition. View certificate. (PDF | 124KB)

National Financial Literacy Month

President Obama proclaimed April 2011 as National Financial Literacy Month in hopes that we recommit to teaching ourselves and our children about the basics of financial education. To show our support, FPA is hosting events throughout the month. Learn more about FPA's participation in Financial Literacy Month.

Protecting Elder Americans from Financial Abuse

FPA teamed up with the Investor Protection Trust, Investor Protection Institute, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and health care professionals to provide a day of free advice and guidance on how Americans can protect themselves and loved ones against investment swindles and financial abuse, with a special focus on the elderly. A toll-free national call-in hotline was available for individuals seeking advice on November 10, 2011.
