April is National Financial Literacy Month

President Obama proclaimed April 2011 as National Financial Literacy Month. To show our support, the Financial Planning Association is hosting the following events during the month of April: 

October 3-9, 2011, marks the Financial Planning Association's® (FPA's®) tenth annual Financial Planning Week®! Learn more about this special week at www.FinancialPlanningWeek.org.

Colorado

April 30, 2011 (9:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m.)
In celebration of Money Smart Week, the Financial Planning Association of Colorado is partnering with the Economic Prosperity Center at King M. Trimble to offer free financial planning on April 30th. The event is open to the general public.

Connecticut

April 30, 2011 (9:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.)
Attend Stamford Financial Planning Day to get free, no strings attached financial advice from professional financial planners on April 30th from 9:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m. at the University of Connecticut — Stamford in Stamford, Conn. The event will feature planners from the Financial Planning Association® and highly qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals, all volunteering their time and expertise to work with local residents one-on-one to address important financial issues such as budgeting, getting out of debt, income taxes, home foreclosures, paying for college, estate planning, insurance, and much more. Educational workshops will be offered on key personal finance topics.

Stamford Financial Planning Day is part of a national Financial Planning Days initiative created by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning and The U.S. Conference of Mayors. Florida

April 27, 2011
The Financial Planning Association of Miami-Dade is partnering with Junior Achievement on April 27th to promote the significance of financial literacy and educate W.J. Bryan Elementary School students to succeed in a global economy. As a part of FPA of Miami-Dade’s continuing dedication to the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) mission of teaching students personal finance concepts, the enthusiastic FPA volunteers will each educate and lead a specific curriculum-based four-hour program.

Illinois

The Financial Planning Association of Illinois will promote Money Smart Week on NBC 5 Morning News on April 1st.  

April 4, 2011 (11:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.)
The Financial Planning Association of Illinois is hosting a seminar and one-on-one consultations on April 4th at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, Ill. Chicago Tribune columnist Gail Marksjarvis will speak at this event.

April 5, 2011 (11:00 a.m. — 4:30 p.m.)
The Financial Planning Association of Illinois is teaming up with S&C Electric to provide one-on-one financial planning consultations to its employees on April 5th.

April 7, 2011 (8:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m.)
The Financial Planning Association of Illinois is teaming up Junior Achievement to host a Junior Achievement Day on April 7th at Drummond Elementary in Chicago, Ill.

Kansas

April 19, 2011 (5:30 — 8:30 p.m.)
Donnelly College in Kansas City, KS is hosting "Taking Care of Financial Basics," which is being sponsored by American Century Investments and the Financial Planning Association of Greater Kansas City. The evening will begin with the Kansas State Treasurer and a nationally known speaker, Lynnette Khalfani-Cox. Lynnette Khalfani-Cox has been a television and radio personality as well as the author of numerous books. She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Phil and Good Morning America. Following the speaker, members of the Financial Planning Association will be available to answer personal financial questions. There will also be several breakout sessions in which FPA members will speak on topics such as Budgeting, Goal Setting, Investment Basics and Retirement Plan Basics. 

Maryland

April 2, 2011 (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
The Financial Planning Association of Maryland is participating in Money Power Day 2011 on April 2nd at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, Md. This annual event provides Baltimore and Maryland areas residents and workers with quality financial services including: financial literacy workshops, free tax preparation, free credit reports and credit counseling, free financial planning sessions, housing counseling, screening for public benefits, and other financial programs. FPA members will host educational workshops and provide one-on-one pro bono financial planning.

Michigan

Missouri

The Financial Planning Association of Greater Kansas City is sponsoring the Money Smart Forum on April 4th at the Rockhurst University Greenlease Library in Kansas City, Mo. College students will be able to gain insight on topics including online banking, debit and credit card uses, credit card history and reports, and identity theft.

The Financial Planning Association of Tulsa is participating in the Day at the Capital in Oklahoma City. FPA members will meet with state legislatures to discuss the importance for financial literacy, the role FPA plays in the local financial community, and key pieces of legislation.
