"The Buzz around B Corps: What Every Financial Advisor Needs to Know"
Speakers: Bart Houlahan and Rodney Willett
Bart Houlahan is a co-founder of B Lab, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Lab drives systemic change through three interrelated initiatives:
1) Certified B Corporations: a corporate certification for sustainable businesses and social enterprises that meet higher standards of social and environmental performance and legal accountability
2) GIIRS Ratings and Analytics: a ratings platform (analogous to Morningstar and Capital IQ) that drives capital to impact investments by assessing the social and environmental performance of companies and funds
3) Benefit Corporations: a new, legally-recognized corporate form that changes corporate fiduciary duty, permitting companies to create shareholder value and social value.
A successful entrepreneur prior to B Lab, Bart was also an investment banker, is a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and an Advisory Board Member of the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Bart is a graduate of Stanford University.
Rodney Willett is Vice President of Business Strategy at Impact Makers, a Richmond based management and technology consulting firm, nationally recognized for its social impact business model: it is a for profit company that contributes all of its profits to charities.
Rodney has more than 22 years of experience working with government and commercial entities, helping to meet their management and technology needs. Prior to Impact Makers, he worked for North Highland, a global management consulting company and directed Virginia’s state government Internet portal.
Rodney is an advocate for educational and public health interests. He is a past chairman of the Richmond Montessori School Board of Trustees, he founded the Pulley Family Endowment at the College of William and Mary to fund public service work by student volunteers world-wide, and he helped create and lead a legal assistance program for the homeless in Northern Virginia.
Rodney is a licensed Virginia attorney, having practiced for many years at Hunton and Williams. He is a graduate of the Collegiate School and the College of William and Mary for both his BA and JD degrees.
