DENVER, Colo.… Henry I. Montgomery, CFP®, 83, a past national president of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP) in 1981, a predecessor organization to today's Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) died September 28.
In addition to ICFP, Montgomery served the financial planning community for more than 25 years in other leadership roles, including service as past Board member of the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) and the founding chair of the Financial Products Standards Board. As ICFP president, Montgomery was instrumental in the creation of the Journal of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, now known as the Journal of Financial Planning and the renowned ICFP Retreat educational program, carried on today by FPA. Montgomery was also an elected district committee member of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and served on the Investment Advisory Committee of the Investment Company Institute. In 1998, Montgomery was awarded the P. Kemp Fain, Jr. Award for his contributions and service to the financial planning community.
"Henry was a leader in the right place at the right time for the fledgling financial planning profession in the early 1980's," said Marvin W. Tuttle, Jr., CAE, executive director and CEO of FPA. "When the profession was hanging on by a thread in its quest for recognition and legitimacy, he stood for an unyielding commitment to the values and standards that are now embraced today by thousands and thousands of planning professionals throughout the world which can be simply summarized in a few words, 'Take care of your clients' interests first and before your own.'"
Montgomery formed Planners Financial Services (PFS) in 1972, a NASD securities investment firm. In 1984 he was joined by his son, Andrew S. Montgomery, who served as president of PFS in 1996 until his death in 1999. Together they created Montgomery Investment Management in 1992, a fee-only affiliate of PFS. He is the founding member of the PFS investment committee. In October 2005 he transferred control of PFS to Don McCoy, J.D. and Jim Keating. Montgomery continued working with his clients until his death.
Montgomery also had a decorated career in the U.S. military, serving as a PFC infantryman, bazooka man and part-time sniper to OSS-CIA Intelligence.
Tuttle continued, "While he was never shy to offer an opinion or a comment, his impact on the development of careers and organizations within the financial planning profession and throughout the world continues to be felt. He undoubtedly will be remembered as one of our most important contributors and his presence in our conversations and conferences will be missed."
Montgomery is survived by his wife Barbara and three children - Ruth, Michael and Kelly - and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Andrew.
