Douglas A. Lennick, CFP®, and Charles F. Wachendorfer

According to conventional wisdom, people behave rationally. However, research has proven that people frequently behave irrationally—often due to extreme emotions, either positive or negative. Behavioral Advice integrates behavioral finance, neuroscience and psychology to help advisors and clients make better decisions throughout the financial planning process. By helping clients align their financial decisions with their values, you shift the focus away from products and give more attention to the spending and saving behavior that impacts clients’ portfolio performance. This can open the door to you serving as a trusted advisor in addition to a money manager.

Code of Ethics: Acting Like a Fiduciary Under CFP Board Rule 1.4

Keith A. Loveland, JD, AIFA, CIDA, GFS

Perhaps the terms "duty of care of a fiduciary" and "fiduciary standard" aren't universally agreed upon, especially among those involved in delivering personal financial planning services. Key elements of "fiduciary duty" typically are believed to involve the duty of loyalty, duty of due care, and related duties. Because it is paramount that a fiduciary act solely in the interests of the client, this course will discuss practical applications of the CFP Board Rule 1.4 through the use of case studies in an interactive session. The case studies will deal with the generally accepted fiduciary standard. That standard generally requires that when investing client assets, the planner must consider only the interests of the client(s) and not those of the planner, its affiliates, its employees or any third parties, even if their own interests align with the client's.

Michael W. Snowdon, CFP®

The impact of the 2008 updates to the Standards of Professional Conduct continue to reverberate throughout the financial services industry and the financial planning profession. Examine the code’s history, the need for such a set of standards, the new standards (including the fiduciary requirement), and how the new code impacts clients, CFP certificants, and the entire financial planning profession.
