January 2013 Starting Thoughts

Innovation

Can you imagine what your life would be like if you never changed anything about yourself or your business? Even if you’re happy and successful now, you can’t remain trapped in a perpetual holding pattern. People around you continue to grow and learn. Their attitudes and needs evolve. Client demographics shift. Markets rise and fall, and the economy seems to change with every global hiccup.

As with you and your business, publications cannot remain in a self-imposed stasis; they either get better or worse. Readers continually expect content that more closely addresses their needs, as well as more convenience and options in terms of how they can access that content.

This issue of the Journal reflects much input from our readers, advisory board members, and other stakeholders. You’ll notice that the cover and inside pages have been redesigned. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty here to make you feel comfortable—much like an old friend wearing a new suit. Color selection and fonts have been updated to more uniformly reflect FPA’s overall branding. The look is cleaner, simpler—more befitting a trusted journal than a magazine trying to grab your attention on a newsstand. A cleaner look also transfers more effectively to various electronic formats.

The second thing you’ll notice is a new regular practice management section. The Journal has always included some content related to practice management, though this was often limited to an annual special issue and occasional Focus articles.

Recently, readers who face ever-growing demands on their time have asked us to provide more of the information they need in a single source, rather than requiring them to search through multiple publications. In response, we are now selectively incorporating some of the best practice management articles that formerly would have been published separately in Practice Management Solutions. We will augment this printed information with practice management articles available electronically.

Speaking of practice management, check out FPA Business Solutions 2013, March 7–9, 2013, at the Westin O’Hare Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. If you’ve attended this annual conference in the past, you know it’s a great way to gain access to practical tools you can apply immediately to drive growth, influence strategy, and increase client satisfaction. But here, too, you’ll find innovation at work. For starters, FPA will incorporate big idea sessions. We think you’ll appreciate these cutting-edge, TED-style presentations built around strategy, technology, and compliance.

Discover the latest technology, trends, and innovations in social media, marketing, and succession planning. FPA Business Solutions 2013 is designed around four tracks in which you will learn how to grow your business and take your practice to the next level. Visit FPASolutions.org to register and to view the conference brochure. Register by January 25 and save $100.

The changes to this month’s Journal are just the latest examples of our commitment to continuous improvement. Keep reading this page for announcements of exciting developments in the coming months.
