Description: This implementation committee is charged with enhancing the relationship with -- and connection to -- the academic and educational communities that support financial planning.
Time Commitment: Quarterly one-hour calls.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Should be an academic or a practitioner with ties to and an interest in the academic community and creating opportunities for engagement and integration.
Selection process: Selections are made at the invitation of the volunteer leader and staff liaison. Applications will be accepted continually and people will be added at the expiration of the committee terms and/or when committee members vacate the group.

Advocacy Committee

Description: This policy committee is tasked with influencing public policy and the regulation of financial planning and other issues affecting the profession.
Time Commitment: Quarterly conference calls & as needed.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: FPA member in good standing.
Selection process: In consultation with the incoming committee chair, the staff liaison makes a recommendation to FPA’s president-elect and CEO who jointly approve candidates for the committee.

Awards/Recognition Committee
Staff chair: Lynn Brackpool
Volunteer leader: Catherine Seeber, CFP® and Dennis Means, CFP®
Description: This implementation committee is tasked with soliciting nominations and, based on specific criteria, determining the recipients of FPA’s P. Kemp Fain, Jr. and Heart of Financial Planning awards.
Time Commitment: Monthly 1-hour conference calls, plus project-specific meetings as needed.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: FPA member in good standing.
Selection process: The volunteer leader and staff liaison identify and select possible committee participants from the pool of eligible members, which may include past award recipients.

Chapter Leadership Committee
Staff chair: Samantha Roe
Volunteer leader: Barry Jones, JD, LLM, CPA, AE
Description: This implementation committee is charged with coordinating the activities and information flow among the chapters and between chapters and national. The group works in partnership with FPA staff to provide strategies, peer consultation, resources, and support services that assist local chapters in developing membership and facilitating effective chapter management, leadership and succession planning.
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls and one or two face-to-face meetings annually.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Member in good standing and former FPA chapter president.
Selection process: A chapter-wide call for volunteers is made in March with a deadline for interested individuals to submit required questionnaires by the end of May. The CLC nominating committee interviews all candidates and submits a slate of the best qualified candidates to CLC for discussion and approval on their August conference call.

Corporate Relations/Major Firms Committee
Staff chair: Jeffrey Hensal
Volunteer leaders: Chris Rand, CFP® and Jim Barnash, CFP®
Description: This implementation committee is responsible for expanding the relationship with and the value proposition for the corporate community.
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Must be an executive at a large firm responsible for managing at least one aspect of financial planning (sales/marketing, training, compliance, etc). Members must be willing to volunteer for activities and tasks.
Selection process: The volunteer leader and staff liaison identify and select possible committee participants from the pool of eligible members.

Community Committee
Staff chair: Laura Brook
Volunteer leader: Jim Johnson, CFP®
Description: This implementation committee is tasked with enabling CFP® practitioners to connect with other practitioners, allied professionals and others to provide business and personal support and camaraderie. The group works towards making FPA the gathering place where those who champion the financial planning process make meaningful connections, build relationships and participate to create knowledge for the betterment of themselves, their profession and their clients.
Time Commitment: Twelve conference calls per year, plus providing feedback by e-mail.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Representation of FPA Community.
Selection process: Outreach to FPA communities, asking the community leadership to designate who best to serve.

Diversity Committee
Staff leader: Christine Richardson
Volunteer chair: Lazetta Rainey Braxton, CFP®
Description: The Diversity Committee is a policy committee responsible for expanding the participation of diverse communities with FPA. The group engages in interactive dialog to raise awareness of and develop specific strategies to increase opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds and life experiences to learn about, enter and thrive in the financial planning profession. The group actively supports the FPA Diversity Statement, and focuses on developing resources for FPA members and all financial planners to accommodate a more diverse client base. Major initiatives for Committee include the Diversity Scholarship program and diversity-related education for FPA members through various channels.
Time Commitment: Monthly 1-hour conference calls, plus project-specific meetings as needed, one optional face-to-face meeting at FPA’s annual conference.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Must be an FPA member in good standing and have a special expertise or perspective needed to complete the committee’s mission. People who are or who have served as diversity officers, who have previous experience working on diversity initiatives, have worked on diversity issues at a local or national level, or with other practical experience are encouraged to apply.
Selection process: As the roster fills and interest in the committee grows, potential members will be asked to serve to support one of the group’s projects before being asked to serve on the committee as a whole. Committee member selections are made by the committee chair and staff leader.

Ethics Committee

Description: This policy committee has responsibility for developing standards and rules of membership then applying those standards on a case by case basis.
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls.
Term of Service: One-year term; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Dedicated to upholding FPA’s Code of Ethics which includes integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism and diligence. Demonstrate a willingness to make tough decisions and to uniformly apply standards, maintain knowledge of the industry and keep abreast of firms that could damage FPA’s reputation in the marketplace.
Selection process: In consultation with the incoming committee chair, the staff leader makes recommendations to FPA’s president-elect and CEO who jointly approve candidates for the committee.

Global Committee

Volunteer chairs: Partha Iyengar and Shawn Brayman
Description: This policy committee is tasked with developing a framework for relationships and programs for the international community of financial planners. The group is made up of FPA volunteers from around the world, who work together to meld their different perspectives into one global vision for the profession. Best practices and stories are shared to help support those dealing with challenges in their respective countries and vet tactics on how best FPA can be a supportive partner to sister organizations around the world. The GAC serves as a conduit and synthesizer of information, gathering ideas and feedback from the Geographic Focus Groups, carrying forward initiatives from FPA’s Board of Directors, and providing the Board with feedback on key international issues.
Time Commitment: Four one-hour conference calls, plus one face-to-face meeting
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total
Qualifications for Service: Representation is made up of chairs of Geographic Focus Groups (Americas, Asia Pacific and EAME) and interested board members.
Selection process: Chairs of Geo Focus Groups are suggested by staff and approved by FPA's president-elect and CEO.

Practitioner Success Committee
Staff chair: Valerie Porter, CFP®
Volunteer leader: Julie Littlechild
Description: This implementation committee is charged with supporting CFP® practitioners’ ability to create, develop, manage a successful financial planning practice.
Time Commitment: Conference calls 6-8 times annually. Each team member will commit to:
- Accommodate team meetings into your work schedule.
- Be aware of schedules and deadlines.
- Actively participate, providing information specific to your area of financial planning practice regarding issues and key processes that contribute to success of the team.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total.
Qualifications for Service: Members are individuals with an interest in serving as outlined in this document, willingness to abide by FPA’s Code of Ethics, Primary Aim and Strategic Priorities, and ability to demonstrate special expertise valuable to the workgroup. Membership may be further apportioned in such a way as to provide representation from: FPA membership, staff, and strategic partners.
Selection process: Selections are made by staff liaison and volunteer leader.

Professional Education
Staff chair: James Tissot, CFP®
Volunteer leader: Michael Kitces, MSFS, MTAX, CFP®
Description: This implementation committee is responsible for: Enhancing the CFP® practitioner’s body of knowledge in all financial planning content areas.
Time Commitment: Monthly 1 hour conference calls, plus project-specific meetings as needed, one optional face-to-face meeting at FPA’s annual conference. Team members will be expected to make time for all conference calls and meet promised deadlines. If the member is unable to attend a meeting or is in jeopardy of missing a deadline, advance notice is to be given.
Term of Service: One-year terms; up to three years total
Qualifications for Service: Members should:
- Be familiar with the educational requirements and process of obtaining the CFP® certification
- Be familiar with other professional designations, licenses and certifications.
- Have an understanding of continuing education requirements and the qualification process for CE credit.
- Abide by FPA’s Standard of Care, Primary Aim and Strategic Priorities.
Selection process: Selections are made by staff liaison and volunteer leader.
Recruitment Time Frame: The initial recruitment is to last through January 2013. Subsequent recruitments will be conducted in September-December annually. Consumer Education Speaking Opportunities
Staff liaison: Ryanne Enyeart
Description: Speak to employees, students and other public audiences on various personal financial planning topics.
Qualifications for service: An individual member must meet the following criteria:
- Be an FPA member in good standing
- Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner
- Abide by FPA's Code of Ethics and FPA's Standard of Care
- Adhere to FPA's Volunteer Speaker Guidelines
Additional Information:
- FPA and the requesting organization will not pay the FPA member a fee for speaking at the event.
- The requesting organization may record the session and redistribute it for a free to its constituents.
- The presentation the FPA volunteer speaker will conduct is informational only. The FPA speaker will not reference or promote his/her company or any products/services.
- The FPA speaker will not actively distribute his/her business cards or solicit clients. However, if an audience member specifically requests a business card, the FPA speaker may provide one.
