Academic Advisory Council
Staff liaison: Mary Corbin
Description: Focuses on the relationship between FPA and the academic community. Specific topics may include: academic research proposals and ties, development of curricular material, better communication between FPA and faculty on topics like publication connections, how to leverage their FPA membership, and resources they can provide to students.
Size of Task Force: 11 volunteers
Time Commitment: Quarterly one-hour calls
Term of Service: Three-year term
Qualifications for Service: Should be an academic or a practitioner with ties to and an interest in the academic community and creating opportunities for engagement and integration.
Selection process: Selections are made are the invitation of the Task Force Chair and staff liaison. Applications will be accepted continually and people will be added at the expiration of the committee terms and/or when committee members vacate the committee.

Americas Task Force

Description: This group is made up of constituents from this area or planners with ties to this geographic region. It serves as the volunteer workgroup fro FPA, where action plans are put in place and tactics are implemented.
Size of Task Force: 12 volunteers
Time Commitment: Four one-hour conference calls annually, plus one face-to-face meeting at FPA's Annual Conferene
Term of Service: One-year term
Qualifications for Service: Willingness to participate in four conference calls per year, respond to e-mail requests for feedback, and intention to attend the FPA Annual Conference. Country representation is limited to two people per country. People are welcome to serve until others from the country express an interest in taking part (at the beginning of the each calendar year).
Selection process: An introductory e-mail is sent to all international members at the beginning of each year. Interested parties are then places in the appropriate Geographic Focus Group.

Asia Pacific Task Force

Description: This group is made up of constituents from this area or planners with ties to this geographic region. It serves as the volunteer workgroup fro FPA, where action plans are put in place and tactics are implemented.

Description: Plans, develops program and secures speakers for the annual FPA Chapter Leaders Conference.
Size of Task Force:  11
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour calls

Qualifications for Service: Current and former chapter leaders and current chapter executives
Selection process: Task Force selections are discussed between the Chair and Staff Liaison based on indications of interest and recommendations/suggestions by internal and external stakeholders

Chapter Leadership Advisory Council (CLAC)

Description: Works in partnership with FPA staff to provide strategies, peer consultation, resources, and support services that assist local chapters in developing membership and facilitating effective chapter management, leadership and succession planning.
Size of Council:  15-17 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls + two face-to-face meetings
Term of Service: Three-year term
Qualifications for Service: Member in good standing and former FPA chapter president
Selection process: A chapter-wide call for volunteers is made in March with a deadline for interested individuals to submit required questionnaires by the end of May.  The CLAC nominating committee interviews all candidates and submits a slate of the best qualified candidates to CLAC for discussion and approval on their August conference call.

Community Advisory Council

Description: A gathering of representatives of FPA Communities to discuss how best to strengthen and support a culture of community within FPA.
Size of Committee:  5 volunteers
Time Commitment: Six conference calls per year, plus providing feedback by e-mail
Term of Service: Three-year term
Qualifications for Service: Representation of FPA Community
Selection process: Outreach to FPA communities, asking the community leadership to designate who best to serve.

Consumer Advisory Council

Description: Provides overall strategic advice to FPA staff on the consumer market development goals and initiatives, focusing on strengthening FPA’s brand to showcase FPA as a leader in financial planning and financial education.
Size of Advisory Group: 10-15 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour calls
Term of Service: Volunteer needs to commit to at least one year of service.
Qualifications for Service: To participate in the Consumer Advisory Council, we prefer the volunteer participates in PlannerSearch (if possible).
Selection process: Volunteers are selected based on member interest. Many volunteers either participate on FPA’s board or attend FPA National meetings and have expressed their desire to support FPA’s consumer initiatives. Minimal travel for in-person meetings is required.  FPA members who are trying to promote their business, services and/or products via FPA’s consumer initiative should not be part of the Consumer Advisory Council.

Consumer Blog Team (All Things Financial Planning Blog)

Description: As a contributor to the Consumer Blog, bloggers create and submit blog posts
Size of Group: 15 Volunteers
Time Commitment:  Regularly 1-2 times per month for 12 months
Qualifications for Service:  To participate on the Consumer Blog Team, the volunteer must be an FPA member in good standing and a financial planning practitioner.
Selection Process:  Volunteers are selected based on member interest.  FPA members who are trying to promote their business, services and/or products via FPA’s consumer initiative should not be part of the CRB.

Consumer Content Review Board

Description: The Consumer Content Review Board is responsible for reviewing content from our  member content submission program and other contributors.
Size of Group: 8 Volunteers
Time Commitment:  Regularly, 1-4 times per month.
Qualifications for Service:  To participate in the Consumer Content Review Board, the volunteer must be FPA members in good standing and a financial planning practitioner.

Consumer Content Submission Program

Description: Write consumer articles, tips, guides and other content for our consumer facing fpanet.org site.
Qualifications: To submit consumer content for the FPA website, the volunteer must be an FPA member in good standing and a financial planning practitioner.
Selection process: Your submitted content will pass through the peer driven Consumer Content Review Board and you will be notified if your submission will be published.  Also, volunteer to be included in our stable of writers and submit content on a regular basis.  Learn more. Consumer Education Speaking Opportunities
Staff Contact: Public Awareness
Description: Speak to employees, professionals, students and other groups on various financial planning topics.
Qualifications for service: An individual member must also meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be an FPA member in good standing who is a financial planning practitioner
  • Abide by FPA's Code of Ethics and agree to uphold to FPA's Standard of Care
  • Adhere to FPA's Volunteer Speaker Guidelines

Additional Information:  A member must complete the FPA Speaker Agreement acknowledging that:

  • FPA and the requesting organization will not pay the FPA member a fee for speaking at the event
  • The requesting organization may record the session and redistribute it for a free to its constituents
  • The presentation for the FPA member speaker will conduct is informational only. The FPA speaker will not reference or promote his/her company or any products/services.
  • The FPA speaker will not actively distribute his/her business cards or solicit clients. However, if an audience member specifically requests a business card, the FPA speaker may provide one.

Corporate Relations Advisory Council

Description: The Corporate Relations Advisory Council consists of four committees:

  • Industry Needs Committee: Mission – to enable FPA to more effectively serve the needs of large firms and the advisers who work for a large firm.
  • Major Firm Events Committee: Mission – to help develop and execute events which bring together large firm executives for the purpose of furthering the financial planning profession.
  • FPA Alliance & Institutional Membership Committee: Mission – to provide feedback and recommendations on FPA’s Alliance and Institutional Membership programs.
  • Defining Financial Planning/Who is a Financial Planner Committee: Mission – to develop thought-leadership and industry consensus around minimum standards for financial planning and who is a financial planner in order to educate consumers and regulators.

Size of Council: Six volunteers in the council; the committees cary from 5-14 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls for each committee. The council meets every-other-month for one hour.
Term of Service: Ongoing
Qualifications for Service: Must be an executive at a large firm responsible for managing at least one aspect of financial planning (sales/marketing, training, compliance, etc). Members must be willing to volunteer for activities and tasks. Committees may have additional specific requirements. 
Selection process: The Council consists of the chairs of each committee - Major Firm Events, Industry Needs and the Large Firm, FPA Alliance and Institutional Membership, and Defining Financial Planning/Who is a Financial Planner. Committee selections are made by staff liaison and the appropriate Chair.

Diversity Committee

Description: Engages in interactive dialog to raise awareness of and develop specific strategies to increase opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds and life experiences to learn about, enter and thrive in the financial planning profession.  The group actively supports the FPA Diversity Statement, and focuses on developing resources for FPA members and all financial planners to accommodate a more diverse client base. A major initiative for the Task Force is the Diversity Scholarship program. 
Size of Committee: Up to 12 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly 1-hour conference calls, plus project-specific meetings as needed, one optional face-to-face meeting at FPA’s annual conference.
Term of Service: Monthly one-hour conference calls, plus project-specific meetings as needed, and one optional face-to-face meeting at FPA's Annual Conference
Qualifications for Service: Must be an FPA member in good standing and have a special expertise or perspective needed to complete the committee’s  mission. People who are or who have served as diversity officers, who have previous experience working on diversity initiatives, have worked on diversity issues at a local or national level, or with other practical experience are encouraged to apply.
Selection process: As the roster fills and interest in the Task Force grows, potential members will be asked to serve on one of the Task Force’s project sub-committees before being asked to serve on the Task Force as a whole. Task Force member selections are made by the Task Force Chair and Staff Liaisons.

Ethics Committee

Description: This committee is responsible for ensuring that all members adhere to the FPA Code of Ethics.  If a member is subject to a disciplinary action or arbitration we review the results to determine if we should take any action against their membership in FPA.  We meet once a month by telephone.
Size of Committee: 11 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour conference calls
Term of Service: One-year term; up to three years total
Qualifications for Service:  Dedicated to upholding FPA’s Code of Ethics which includes integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism and diligence. Demonstrate a willingness to make tough decisions and to uniformly apply standards, maintain knowledge of the industry and keep abreast of firms that could damage FPA’s reputation in the marketplace.
Selection process: In consultation with the incoming committee chair, government relations staff makes recommendations to FPA’s president-elect and CEO who approve candidates for the committee.

Global Advisory Council

Description: This group is a gathering of FPA volunteers from around the world, who work together to meld their different perspectives into one global vision for the profession.  Best practices and stories are shared to help support those dealing with challenges in their respective countries and vet tactics on how best FPA can be a supportive partner to sister organizations around the world.  The GAC serves as a conduit and synthesizer of information, gathering ideas and feedback from the Geographic Focus Groups, carrying forward initiatives from FPA’s Board of Directors, and providing the Board with feedback on key international issues. 
Size of Council:  11 volunteers
Time Commitment: Four one-hour conference calls, plus one face-to-face meeting
Term of Service: Three-year term
Qualifications for Service: Representation is made up of chairs of Geographic Focus Groups (Americas, Asia Pacific and EAME) and interested board members
Selection process: Board members are chosen by Marv and president elect and chairs of Geo Focus Groups are suggested by staff and approved by FPA's Executive Director/CEO, Marv Tuttle, and current FPA president-elect.

Government Relations Committee/Public Policy Advisory Council

Description: Provides oversight and direction to FPA's legal, legislative and regulatory efforts on public policy issues affecting financial planners and consumers.

Membership Benefits/Services Advisory Council

Description: Consists of volunteer members dedicated to helping FPA achieve its membership goals.  The Council is a sounding board for new FPA membership initiatives and a think tank for new ideas.  The Council teams with chapter membership directors to implement national programs at the chapter level facilitate communications between national and chapters, increase membership recruitment and retention, and address specific membership issues. 
Size of Advisory Group: 12 volunteers
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour calls
Term of Service: Two years
Qualifications for Service:  Members of this workgroup are former and current chapter leaders with a passion for membership and enthusiasm to help chapter leaders and FPA reach our membership goals.
Selection process: A sub-committee of the Council interviews potential members and provides a slate for vote by the entire Council

New Professionals Advisory Council

Description: Focuses on how to serve individuals who want to enter or establish careers in financial planning. Sample activities include engaging FPA chapters in grassroot activities/events such as developing an annual career day and starting FPA student chapters.
Size of Advisory Group: Seven volunteers, plus members on committees as required (currently 11 on Career Development Committee)
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour calls, with additional light and infrequent contributions
Term of Service: Two years
Qualifications for Service:  FPA members with expertise and passion in the areas of growing financial planning and the Association and enhancing the success of individuals who are new to the profession.
Selection process: Current members of the New Professionals Advisory Council nominate volunteers who are approved by the chairman and staff liaisons,

P. Kemp Fain, Jr. Award Task Force

Practice Management Center Blogger

Description: Submit a blog post (fewer than 500 words) related to practice management (running a successful financial planning business) and fitting into one of the following categories: marketing, client skills, technology, HR/staff, compliance, operations

Practice Management Solutions Advisory Board

Description: Collaborates with edit staff to create a practice management magazine for FPA members that are relevant, timely and actionable, as well as applicable to FPA's online Practice Management Center. 
Size of Advisory Board: Maximum of 10 volunteers
Time Commitment: Quarterly one-hour call
Term of Service: One-year term with possible second term. Terms begin Jan 1.
Qualifications for Service: Current FPA member in good standing.

  • Actively involved in the financial planning profession
  • Interest in and passion for practice management topics and issues
  • Commitment to serve term of one year

Selection process:

  • Current members of the Practice Management Solutions Editorial Advisory Board are welcome to suggest candidates for new members to the edit staff at any time
  • Candidates must be current members of FPA in good standing, and actively involved in the financial planning profession (either as a planner, a practice management expert, an educator or consultant)
  • Candidates must embrace and support the mission of Practice Management Solutions, which is to provide timely, relevant and actionable practice management content to FPA members
  • Candidates are confirmed by the Practice Management Solutions edit staff

Description: Focuses on the strategic vision for education and knowledge in FPA. Activities include developing strategies to support cultivating the body of knowledge of personal financial planning. Includes: Career Development, Future of Planning, Professional Development, Research.
Size of Committee: 5 volunteers
Time Commitment: Conferences calls 4-6 times annually. Each team member will be expected to commit to:

  • Actively participate, providing information specific to your area of financial planning practice regarding issues and key processes that will contribute to success of the team.

Pro Bono Advisory Committee

Description: Works together with FPA staff to establish guidelines for FPA pro bono programs, develop resources for use by chapters and volunteers, and mentor chapter leaders on the development of local initiatives. 
Size of Committee: Varies
Time Commitment: Monthly one-hour calls
Term of Service: One-year term; three years maximum 
Qualifications for Service: Members are drawn from current and past chapter pro bono directors and volunteers, with consideration given to ensuring representations of chapters of different sizes, locations and program development stages.
Selection process: Candidates are selected by the Director of Pro Bono Services based on his/her contacts with chapter pro bono leaves, recommendations from PBAC members and referrals from FPA staff.  Candidates for chair are selected form along PBAC members by the Director with input from the outgoing chair.  All candidates for membership and the chair are forwarded to the FPA president-elect for appointment.
